Rudolf Pěchouček’s apartment house

This at-first-glance inconspicuous two-story apartment building on the corner of Radobyčická and Čelakovského Streets was designed by the Pilsen architect Rudolf Pěchouček as his own house. His company Stavopodnik started the construction work in March 1939, and in July of the same year the building was completed. The author of the project highlighted the smooth unadorned facade with the main entrance facing Čelakovského Street with a portly avant-corps above the ground floor broken by a pair of triple windows on each floor. He repeated the same motif of a protruding, this time uniaxial risalit on the other side – the street facade. The Pilsen architect endorsed contemporary Modernist trends with rounded building corners as well, emphasising the curves with a prominent crown molding and, above all, a roof extension with a flat roof. Pěchouček brightened up the austere purist morphology of the main facade with coloured ceramic cladding of the base and window scuncheons, while breaking the court facade at the landing level with a trio of balconies with iron pipe railing.

A modest caretaker’s apartment and a laundry with cellars were situated in the basement of the apartment building, a studio flat and two one- or two-bedroom apartments with kitchen, bathroom, pantry and toilet on the ground floor and each upper floor. A one-bedroom apartment with facilities was also located in the attic.
