Apartment building of Anna and Jan Matoušek

The Matoušeks’ apartment house, descriptive number 346, erected in 1937 on the corner of the streets U Trati and Na Belánce, completed the existing terraced development built since the mid-1930s on former Bavorská Street (today U Trati). The owners entrusted the design of the house to the Pilsen architect František Němec Jr., with whom they had collaborated on several of their other construction projects.

At the request of the planning office, Němec complied with the height of the cornice and roof ridge of the newly-built adjacent house (C3–2151), which he had designed in 1936 also for the Matoušeks. The architectural concept of the house does not significantly deviate from the others and supports the overall Functionalist character of the housing block. The facade is enlivened by a shallow, elevated projecting section wrapping the rounded corner and render bands passing horizontally between the individual floors. In contrast with the smooth renders of the facade, the architect applied small areas of pointed brickwork between the windows.
The house contained a total of eight standard two-room and three-room flats with kitchens and bathrooms. The basement held technical spaces as well as a studio flat and a garage with an exit onto Na Belánce.

The original austere architectural look of the building was unfortunately undermined by a recent reconstruction, during which the facade was given a new, strongly coloured render. The original accent of the brickwork between the windows as the only “ornament” of the facade was thus quite lost.
