František Kvasnička’s Centrogarage
1931–1932

The garage and automobile service centre Centrogaráže at 43 Nerudova Street was opened on 1 October 1932. It was hailed by the press as the first modern garage in Pilsen. “We will be watching with interest how the public receives Centrogaráže. In Pilsen, as we know, it takes a little longer for things to be accepted...”, a report said shortly after it launched operation. The owner of the complex was the builder František Kvasnička, who had his office in the adjacent house No. 41. The facade of the Centrogaráže two-storey reinforced concrete building was divided by a regular pattern of windows, the main entrance was accentuated by four vertical windows on the upper floor and a high parapet. There were 75 garage spaces supplied with electrical lighting and steel shutters and most had steam heating. Motorists also had access to two carwash bays, each with an automated car-lift and a pressurised water spray. The centre also offered car servicing. Up to the 1980s, the Pilsen transport company Dopravní podnik města Plzně operated a garage and car hire service here. The building, whose spatial arrangement has remained practically unchanged over the years, still serves the needs of motorists.
